Social Media Not Just for Teens

For teens, social media is not technology, it’s just life

For teens, social media is not technology, it’s just life
By Tim Finin on Sunday, January 13th, 2008 at 10:23 pm.
Alan Kay got it right when he said “Technology is anything that wasn’t around when you were born.” — a quote I’d not heard until I saw it on danah boyd’s blog recently. She cited it to explain why today’s youth find it so natural to use Internet technology while their parents find it a bit strange and artificial.
The Pew Internet & American Life Project published a report on Teens and Social Media with the tag line “The use of social media gains a greater foothold in teen life as they embrace the conversational nature of interactive online media”.
“Some 93% of teens use the Internet, and more of them than ever are treating it as a venue for social interaction — a place where they can share creations, tell stories, and interact with others.
The Pew Internet & American Life Project has found that 64% of online teens ages 12-17 have participated in one or more among a wide range of content-creating activities on the internet, up from 57% of online teens in a similar survey at the end of 2004.
Girls continue to dominate most elements of content creation. Some 35% of all teen girls blog, compared with 20% of online boys, and 54% of wired girls post photos online compared with 40% of online boys. Male teens, however, do dominate one area — posting of video content online. Online boys are nearly twice as likely as online girls (19% vs. 10%) to have posted a video online where others could see it.”
The Kay quote reminds me of Arthur C. Clark’s third law:
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
Although I am not sure anyone really sees blogging as magic. Maybe it’s not yet sufficiently advanced.
It’s here to stay, in order to avoid getting marginalized out of on line networks and the new wave of business, make it part of your life.

Creating a Google Account

This is all info that you can find by googling, Create a Google Account, but I have posted the link below in case you need additional info. See you tomorrow.

Basics: Creating an accountPrint
To create a Google Account, just visit the account-creation page, enter your current email address, and choose a password. Once you've finished registering, you'll receive a verification email. Click the link in that email to complete the verification process.

Your Google Account will give you access to a variety of Google products, including iGoogle, Web History, Picasa, and many more. When creating an account, please keep these guidelines in mind:

Your Google Account username should be an email address from which you currently send and receive mail, unless you'd prefer to sign up for Gmail.
Your password should be at least eight characters long and can't be a commonly used word. Select a unique combination of letters and numbers.
In the Word Verification section, you'll need to type the wavy characters exactly as they appear in the picture.
Creating a Google Account doesn't give you Gmail. However, you can sign up for Gmail by visiting the Gmail homepage and clicking the Sign up for Gmail link under the sign-in box. If you're interested in learning more about Gmail, please visit the About Gmail page.
Note: you'll be able to access all the same Google products mentioned above with your Gmail username and password.
Find additional info at: http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=27441

P.S. If you have a g-mail account you can use that e-mail and password to log in.
